But let’s face it, most people aren’t going to do all the research before buying their first firearm. So we’ve done it for them. Below is a description of 3 different common firearms:

  • Pistol – The term pistol has several meanings, depending on the context. In its broadest sense, the word “pistol” simply refers to any handgun and can include semi-automatic pistols or revolvers. However, in a more restricted sense, the term usually refers to handguns with relatively compact dimensions, designed to be carried in a holster.
  • Rifle – The name rifle is derived from the French word “rifler” meaning to cut with a sword. The rifle was invented in 1591 by Rene Barbette, which became more commonly known as the blunderbuss. There are two primary types of rifles, long and short. A long rifle is a type of firearm designed for accuracy and distance. A short rifle is designed for short-range target shooting and hunting small game.
  • Shotgun – A shotgun is a long gun that uses the energy of a fixed shell to fire multiple projectiles. A shotgun has a smooth bore (unribbed) and typically contains 3 to 10 shells in its magazine tube. The term shotgun also applies to the shotshells fired from it, which are typically small spherical lead balls that measure about .33 inches in diameter.

Range Safety Rules

As a shooter, you are responsible for your own safety and that of others around you. Firearms and ammunition can be dangerous, so it is important for new shooters to understand what safety rules must be followed to help prevent accidents. To use a firearm safely, you must know four basic rules. Always treat every firearm as though it were loaded. Never point a firearm at anything you do not intend to shoot. Be sure of your target and what is beyond it. Keep your finger straight and off the trigger until you are ready to shoot. These rules apply whether on the range or hunting in the field.

Marksmanship

Marksmanship is discipline, accuracy, potential and the ability to take down targets. Gunpower is the collective effort to take down a group of enemies as efficiently as possible. Being a tank in a game is great and all, but having skills to keep your teammates alive when they are being targeted or when you are under fire ensures victory on the field of battle. A team is only as good as its weakest link and teamwork separates the men from the boys.
